city dwellers in winter (choka)

Seagulls – TorontoStar

(choka)

sits by the garden
now a bed of frozen dirt

framed in grey concrete
watches evening traffic flow

three pigeons peck crumbs
office people may have dropped

the cry of seagulls
alert brethren siting food

screech getting closer
envy, greed tormenting gull

pigeons gulp with haste
all but one flew away

then down for the kill
gull assaults the trembling bird

walkers passing by
chase the gull who flies away

bitter cold winter
turns them all into vultures

watching the whole show
wren hunts in that bed of dirt

mourner’s sacred sign
day by day, wren visits her
reminiscing of the past

Charlie the fisher-cub (choka)

Since this blog is mostly devoted to Japanese forms of poetry, I decided to add this Choka here following a 3-Word Wednesday prompt.  The 3 words are: devious  – frown  – venomous

 (choka)

Mama frowned at him
worried for her baby cub

Charlie insisted
I’ll be okay, Mama Bear

he went to the lake
he’d have to be devious

to outsmart those fish
but she didn’t know his friend

Pooh Bear was his pal
brought his bucket of minnows

they caught many fish
Mama would be proud of him!

then he heard a sound
a rattle snake snuck near him

Pooh jumped up and down
excited and petrified

not grasping he’d squished
that venomous rattle snake

Hurray, Hurray! Pooh!!
Mama’ll be ever grateful

you’re a shoe in now
come on let’s break the good news
off they marched with the day’s catch

Monday noon walk (choka + haiku)

(choka)

winter wonderland
snow filling my balcony

sipping my java
redundant image I see

cars slowing their speed
public transit the smart means

at twenty below
feels like minus thirty-five

dressing warm for work
wrapped in wool and feather lined

with studs on my boots
sun still pierces through the clouds

squinting and slogging
shuffling my way to the bus
admiring this winter scene

snow covered path
shadow at my side, leaves me
I get on the bus

CP Special Fuyuko Tomita’s “shadow”

magical night (choka- haiku)

Vincent van Gogh said about this painting :

"... it does me good to do what’s difficult. That doesn’t stop me having a tremendous need for, shall I say the word — for religion — so I go outside at night to paint the stars"

walking to the store
found it windy and chilly

felt my hands frosting
forgetting my gloves at home

hands in my pocket
writhed along slippery paths

looked up at the sky
so many glistening stars

mouth open in awe
dazed by such magnificence

this massive ceiling
of art looms over my head

exhaled sigh of bliss
feeling blessed to be alive

I smiled at the moon
“could I have seen him wink back?”

a fairy-tale night
I could feel it in my bones

something wonderful
would be happening tonight

I then felt a bump
with an awkward step, I slipped
fell flat on my back
arms spread to make snow angels
I winked back at the Moon.

 sudden gust
snow circled around me
angels appeared

Carpe Diem “Angels”

angling (choka)

rocking on water
wobble on old St Lawrence

tremble with north winds
still, push forth on this journey

angling trout and pike,
a rare catch this time of year

wobble, swaddle, rock
feel a need to be out here

pikes biting blindly
frigid waters skew their view

holding rod in wait
the wind blows, eyes well in tears

my boat keeps rocking
whispering tale or two

this cold skews my mind
shaking such thoughts free, I trawl

embracing my life
know now, certainties are naught

shadow squirms below
a pike! first catch of the day

wiggles to get free
smile at my startling game

trust life’s mysteries
unexpected brings such joy

time to moor safely
catch the riverside sunset
ends sublimely my journey
