scent of autumn (troibun)

Autumn entails hard work for those who own homes especially with gardens. It is a time where leftover vegetables and dead leaves blend with garden soil…getting the land ready for a long slumber under snow covered grounds. Grownups are busy with garden tools and raking leaves in tall mounds.

resting on a nest of leaves
scent of autumn

midday break
crunch of Mackintosh
by the maple tree

resting on a nest of leaves
grandson helps her up
failing knees accept

scent of autumn
marigolds slip in
summer’s remains

hidden dreams (Haiga-Troiku) daily moments Feb 12

It’s hard to believe on Sept 27/17 the forecast today is 31C and this image is the forecast in about three months down the road that can go down to -30C…Guess I won’t complain of the heat today.

Hope mixed with despair
from my bedroom window
dreams beneath the snow

hope mixed with despair
buried under heavy layers
winter laughs at me

from my bedroom window
lull of rumbling snow ploughs
drifting off to sleep

dreams beneath the snow
fleeting thoughts of blossoms
tulips pierce the snow

a looney or a tooney (troibun)

They passed by him one by one. The sun had just risen and many people shuffled South coming back from their night shift; they seemed to notice him and some would stop by and say hi, or offer him something; others were in their own world walking zombie like; they couldn’t wait to hit the pillow.

And then there was another crowd walking the other direction, very quickly going to their day job. Most of them did not notice him and some even smirked at him as if he were a nuisance.

After the weekend, the morning crowd was not always accommodating.

by the Métro door
sips the last of his coffee
folks rush by

by the Métro door
holds out his Tim Horton cup
longing heavy coins

sips the last of his coffee
the nurse in purple, brings him
every Monday

folks rush by
every hundredth person drops
a big fat toonie

thunderstorm
breeds a welcome stillness
after power fails
reading by candlelight

historical romance novel (troiku)

The Pleasure of Reading

in an old wing-chair
shadows dancing on the page
candles flicker

in an old wing-chair
sounds of firecrackers
thunderbolts

shadows dancing on my page
lost in time
ancient love story

candles flicker
after the storm – silence,
the old hound farts

The Pleasure of Reading

lightning in the sky
warnings
wrapped in darkness

lightning in the sky
like the first of July
nature’s fireworks

warnings
thunderstorm
lights out

wrapped in darkness
candles shedding light
I turn a page

Blue moons (troiku)

wisteria blooms
hanging on
lovers’ tales

wisteria blooms
remembering
their love

hanging on
fragrant yet bittersweet
their last kiss

lovers’ tales
cries echo from the alps
blue moon shedding tears

Daily moments ~ My grain simmers September 23/17 (Troiku + Senryu)

Time lingers
Caterpillar crawl
My Head hurts

Time lingers
Thunderbolts in my head
Sunshine mocks me

Caterpillar crawl
Patiently waits
My heart quickens

My head hurts
Waiting for the storm to pass
A fog settles

(Senryu)

Finally relief
wraps me in a bed of comfort –
GrandMaman’s arms

GrandMaman’s arms
soothed me as a child
pacifier

pacifier
GrandMaman’s faith numbed my pain,
softened my sobs

Feel so giddy now
pain is just a memory
storm has come and gone

feeling silly
childlike
and free…

but oh, so tired
such power given
that inner storm.

Saturday ends
sun no longer mocks me
until dawn

until dawn
hoping for a peaceful night
rising to a fresh start

the other side of gloom (haibun)

Kim had moved to the big city seeking a better life; major changes are difficult especially in the beginning. She was well aware of that. She felt so isolated being away from family and friends. She was not accustomed to the standoffish air of some city folks making her transition even more challenging.

Up at dawn every morning on her way to work, she would drive by the lake greeted by the sun slowly rising over the lake. Each morning she felt blessed and encouraged, sensing the Great Spirit must be smiling at her.

new dawn beckons
blinding all despair
promises of hope
