reflections of a helper (free verse and solo renga)

This is a free verse written for MicroPoetry Month with the theme of “violence” in mind, reflections of a youth counsellor, followed by solo renga.

She listens with benevolence
their stories never told
the shame and guilt of violence
those tales so raw and bold
of adults spewing cunning lies
they violate ‘til she cries.

A pause ensues, she hears a sigh
despite attempts to offer hope
their stories make her cry

said tears bring no relief
some tales are just too hard to bear
she hears them in their grief;

the hardest tale of all to share
are secrets found in dark despair
illicit truths, unmasking lies
“You know I love you… Daddy cares.!”

she holds their secrets in her heart
and hopes the healing may finally start

tomorrow is another day
she knows it will soon start again
and she’ll be there to hear their say
in hopes to soothe the constant pain
if even for the briefest moment
expunge the grief away

(solo renga)

autumn leaves
left on the grounds
destroy emerald greens

remains left to decompose
destroy the life beneath

tending to debris
allows the earth to breath
thrive again in spring

Birthday memories

autumn sunshine
is that really you, Mom?
through my window

blinded by memories
holding my first born

proud Nanny
strutting with purpose
pushing an English pram

irresistible urges
pinching his chubby cheeks

time flashes by
grandson holds her frail hand
in a nursing home

Nanny just won’t let go
love always wins over

recalls for one split second
joys of grandmotherhood

searching nervously
in his liquid blues
it all comes back

dipping his tiny fingers
in his first birthday cake

November skies (solo renga)

Solo Renga

different shades of grey
misty skies and barren trees
autumn’s dark demise

lavish colours washed away
November’s final purge

wise ones flying south
joining other feathered friends
honking their goodbyes

Trick or Treat Solo no renga

© Clr’15 Me in 2008 at work in Toronto

cobwebs hang on doors
everyone plays “dress-up”,
shouting, “trick or treat!

old lady wringing her hands
“well, now my little pretties!”

Dracula next door
handing out bags of treats
children grab and run

Sweet dreams of love (solo no renga)

decades
of love affairs
reminiscent dreams

Marvin Gaye reminding me
how sweet it is

thinking of you
lightheaded and giddy
breathing in your scent

help me before I fall in love
all over again

melancholy dreams
a case of you so bittersweet
my soul still bleeds

Daily Moments – October 18/17 -Reflections of loves come and gone, sweet love and bitter heartbreaks

under the Buck Moon (haibun)

Winding Road

Driving to their summer cottage in July along that long twisting road filled vacationers with such excitement and promise. A year older since last summer, the girls and boys have blossomed,  each with varied agenda…some fulfilling romantic dreams, others realizing hormonal packed fantasies…

winding road
summer’s burgeoning fruits
ripen in time

plucked under a full moon
succulent sighs trickle

their last kiss lingers
haunting the winding road home
September adieus

Daily moments ~ shady dreams~ Troiku + solo no renga September 26 2017

sinking deeper
well of uncertainty
darkness cradles me

sinking deeper
gravity takes control
mocking me

well of uncertainty
taunting me with promise
empty like the well

darkness cradles me
acquiescent and submissive
I sleep

I sleep
fingers pointing
a mother’s look

mocking and contriving
faces in my dreams

cringing with self-doubt
know not what to do
praying to wake up

shrill of morning calling
finally in the greyness

dependable
is my darkness
holding me together

kindred spirits

As children and teens they were very close sisters.  And then they grew up and life happened.   Now they are rebuilding anew since their mother passed filling the gap despite the physical distance between them.   Certainly, their mother has a hand in this…

on a park bench
a cool breeze kisses her face
last minute blossoms

a woman walks her dog
butterfly lands on her cheek

both women smile
knowingly
Mom’s paid a visit

Daily Moments – September 6  2017  tropical casualties (Solo no renga)

earth wind and water
vying for control
egos sinking

man waits in a puddle
feeble solicitude

butterfly flutters
birds raise their nests
ants digging deeper

creation pleading
Mother Nature mourns

shedding
antiseptic tears
in prayer we wait

even through grey skies
sun still shines brightly
above those clouds

despite life’s quagmires
moon shines down on me

never give up hope
even through thunder storms
the Great Spirit knows
