untold futures so many changes, scent of decay necessary losses autumn leaves waving like there’s no tomorrow… unknown destinies.. are they really? darkness looms ever so cunning coloured leaves giving notions of joy, and yet, life’s on pause… trees shedding life- one by one… on a sheet of rot children unaware seeing only beauty prancing, giggling jumping into piles staring at the sky until they’re all packed stuffed in paper bags carted off -- interred some buried in their gardens rest through the winter bringing life to earth in the spring how I love the different shades this bittersweet season the freshness of the air and yet, the scent of death pierces my soul my joints scream my heart is heavy… wondering if spring will ever come again… ©cheryl-lynn 2021/09/21 Daily Moment Muse – Free Verse

endings and losses Free Verse
Today I learned that a very special person in my life will be leaving…going far away and it saddens me very much. Loss is part of everyday life. I know that but it doesn’t make it any easier. My first reaction is sadness, then anger at whoever pushed someone away, then sadness again and I swim in that for quite some time. Sometimes guilt creeps up if I think of what I should have, could have sad when he was in my life and then I dive back down to sadness…so as I wallow in my grief this is what I have to say…
losses and endings not easy to take
saying goodbye makes my heart break
we experience loss every day, every minute
ooos there goes by a minute already!
spiritual gurus keep telling us
to be present, remain in the now
it takes many losses and defeats
to come to a place of now
to finally understand what the gurus say
enjoy each precious moment of the day
losses and endings not easy to take
saying goodbye makes my heart break
tell your friend she is pretty
thank your colleague for their support
tell your manager how helpful he has been
just don’t waste precious time away
enjoy each priceless moment of the day
losses and endings not easy to take
saying goodbye makes my heart break
tell your son how special his is
tell your daughter how
you wish you were strong like her
thank your mother for everything
that you have taken to help you strive
tell your father how you feel
just don’t waste precious time away
enjoy each priceless moment of the day
remember the good times
you’ve shared with friends and family
discard the bad times
once you’ve learned from them
even when you say goodbye
to a dear friend
their memory is always with you
right there in the crux of your heart
no one can take that away from you
even after you’ve said goodbye
losses and endings not easy to take
saying goodbye makes my heart break
so just don’t waste precious time away
enjoy each priceless moment of the day
embrace your loved ones
like it’s your very last day.

painful goodbyes (haibun)

Saying goodbye can be so painful and that is what she did at the train station this evening. Idle chatter filled their last hour sitting on the platform waiting for the train. When the whistle blew, LAST CALL…they both stopped talking. They stared at each other for the longest two minutes without exchanging one word. Their eyes searched into each other’s soul, trying to transcribe those heavy thoughts. Their eyes swam in painful puddles…tears rolling down their cheeks…still, not a word.
The train’s engine started up and they simply hugged each other tightly for a brief moment and he picked up his valise and turned towards the train, never looking back.
Rather than take a cab home, she decided to walk the 10 kilometre passage on foot.
piercing emptiness
tearing at her heart
tears spill from heaven

bridging seasons (haibun – troiku)
Last week she went on a journey, visiting special people who touched her soul with lasting imprints on her heart…now and forever.
last days of autumn
taking in final colours
imitating life
last days of autumn
crossing to the other side
between seasons
taking in final colours
hanging on to lifeless limbs,
Ah! those tawny leaves
imitating life
poinsettia on a gravesite
honouring the dead

autumn reflections
as I cross the sun warmed bridge
geese fly south
autumn reflections
old man contemplates winter
under the hot sun
as I cross the sun warmed bridge
ducks laugh downstream
– diving for trout
geese fly south
the noisy swallows have gone
but the blackbird sings
Ramblings on life (haiga)
(haiku)
hot muggy day
spider finds a cool safe place
took a bubble bath
August sailing
gusty winds tense the jib
crow kissed a windshield
fly fidgets
buzzes around his arm.
SWAT!
spider spins
all night long diligently
Eureka!
children’s park
swings, teeter totters, slides
barbarian invasion
children giggling
bright coloured kites catch the sun
string floats silently

(free verse)
If I were an insect,
who knows how my life would end?
If I were a bird,
who knows how the wind would blow?
If I were a child living in the wrong part of the world,
who knows when my life would end?
Life is a gift for some,
a puzzle for so many,
an affliction for too many…
What life lends
may be a mystery
black and white blends
interesting and dreary
I can always count
on rivers to flow
on the sun to glow
sunsets sublime
and the moon to shine
