E is for Emerald (Troibun) Day 6 NaPoWriMo

napo2016button1

E is for Emerald and my mom’s favourite colour was green makes this post all the more meaningful.   When I think of the word “emerald” however, I also think of Emerald City in the land of Oz which was the famous dream of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz.  I was quite surprised when I read that this children`s book was published in 1900, written by Frank Baum and illustrated  by W. W. Denslow.  If you look at the illustrations, you can see the characters in the movie (1939) were pretty darn close.

Every October the movie played on television when I was growing up and my father would call my sister and me to come watch the movie with him and my mother. It was a tradition, sort of like The Sound of Music was with my children and other holiday classics.

Ah that Emerald City was the place where Dorothy would get all her problems resolved and get home to Kansas. How I loved her red patent leather shoes!! And the famous phrase was on the lips of many after a long trip, “There’s no place like home, There’s no place like home.”

No matter how many times I saw the movie, each time I would still fear that wicked old witch and her soldiers and those trees too!!! Oh, my goodness!!

I never realized how much that movie became a part of me until I was a young adult and read The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty and every night I was so scared of the devil (being Catholic we actually feared being possessed!) for three months after reading this book, I would cross my arms over my chest and repeat “I don’t believe in the power of the devil, I don’t, I don’t, I don’t” I became the Lion that lacked courage at 20 years old!  I never could see the movie…if ever it was television and I turned the channel on that movie by mistake, just a few seconds hearing a deep voice coming out of that little girl, I would have nightmares for days!  Yep, that’s how scared I was.

Emerald City was such a place to be and I loved the part where Dorothy is getting all prettied up ( my mother being a hairdresser made it  even more meaningful).  My mother loved Judy Garland (who played Dorothy) and even when her dementia was very advanced, I would sing Somewhere Over the Rainbow and her eyes came back to life.

Blogging from A to Z

Interestingly as I was looking for a word synonymous with never forgotten, I heard the voice of Nat King Cole crooning “unforgettable” in my mind, and just knew, Mom was near me at this very moment.

Sitting on the riverbank, she feels the coolness of the rapids and gently drowns in the moment…

riverbed rumbles
swallows chirp while gulls screech
one melody

Thoughts that tear her spirit, slowly slip into the water, flowing with the current, mending her soul.

a creative process (troibun)

Late evenings she sits at her antique desk waiting. It was a test of patience that her creative mind endured every night.

holds her mother’s vintage pen
under lit candle

by the window
signs of a summer’s breeze
a flame flutters

holds her mother’s vintage pen
waiting for her muse to write
words of her own

under lit candle
waits to untangle letters,
like a magic potion

January 12’16 Daily Moments- Winters of Yore (Haibun)

Walking across the mall’s parking lot she looked up at the glorious blue sky. The sun was hiding behind a tiny grey cloud, probably snow in that one. And then she saw a huge grey mass. It was where the snowploughs push the snow. In the past ten days, the lovely air we breathe in this city added its global charm.

masking the universe

sun plays peak- a- boo
grey puffs drifting
frowning at our air
unforgiving images
masking the universe

Viewing her photos the dreary mountain disgusts her. The wonderful thing about art and photography is that one can alter eyesores to more delightful landscapes.

Looking at this prompt at The Secret Keeper, this Saturday morning, watching a romantic (cheesy) movie my muse got caught up with this poem.

Daily Moments Jan 7 2016 (Shame on you! -haibun)

Does greed alone rule the world? Must one make money on the sufferings of others?  This is not a statement about being politically correct…no indeed!  It is a cry of frustration and disappointment that, yet again, the greedy vulturesw takes over common sense, compassion and savoir vivre.

Happy New Year (haibun – daily moments – haiga)

© Clr '16

Happy New Year !  I sit here, thinking of the possibilities of this year and hope I can fill at least a tiny part of these inspired opportunities I do have.

We are well into three hours of 2016 and I am high on life, my beliefs and my hopes.  I just finished watching Patch Adams and Robin Williams made me laugh out loud and weep with happiness at the compassion he shows to patients.  The only bad words in the entire movie for me was “transference” and “class above patients”.  Yes, well, this movie just confirmed what I have felt, lived and believed most of my career in the helping profession.  Oh, I know I am not a medical expert but the message in this film goes beyond that.   I am not an expert, people who come  for support are the experts and I simply try to help them recognize that.

This film renewed my faith in my goal in life. To strive for compassion even when things look bleak for me, to not judge, and to expect nothing more than a will to try to to remember the times I have been low on life and simply show empathy.  We’ve all been there.    Sometimes the only thing we can say is, “Man that sucks! I’m sorry you are going through that.”

I don’t believe in making a list of resolutions for the New Year because that just leads to causing stress and fear of not succeeding. The only resolve I do want to carry over every year is to strive to be the best person I can be, forgive myself when I slip up and keep my heart open at all times even if it hurts sometimes.  The benefits are worth the pain.

This past year was a year of healing and I don’t think I would have managed as well (with my sanity) without your support and encouragement. Bless you and thank you.

Writing here in this amazing community at WordPress has enabled me to grow in my writing…I have learned through your comments and through your creative gems you have shared here.

Onward to 2016 with as much inspiration and soulful promise in writing and sharing.
