Travelling long distances is something new for her. She would travel far to get to one destination only and come back. But now she travels and sometimes takes detours to get to a destination. The time to be there is vague…she tries not to depend on tight schedules. She knows somehow thy will be done. Perhaps some of her guru’s philosophy is rubbing off on her. She knows she has to learn her way and though through guidance, mantras or prayer, readings…these are simply tools to help interpret life around her….the one she was blind to.

She was raised with a strict Catholic upbringing. She remembers her Grand-Maman beading her rosary every night. She now rolls each bead when chanting a mantra, a gift from her guru, Divine Mother, Amma. And yet reading The Pilgrimage she finds more parallels than differences in the lessons presented compared to Amma’s wise tales teaching her devotees.
Today, as she was walking out of the Métro Rosemont, she noticed a young woman limping and her heart sank seeing her twisted foot in a heavy winter boot. Usually she would start chanting her mantra with a person in mind but for some reason as she walked out onto the street, she started reciting the Lord’s Prayer, ten Hail Mary’s and Glory Be to the Father. What made her do it felt natural…she was asking Mother Mary to help this young woman and at least give her a good day today. She had not recited these prayers in a while and she was not surprised…it felt natural and right.
She looks at the wooden rosary she brought home from her mother’s bedroom and sets aside her beads before retiring…

Long ago, she remembers sipping her loose leaf tea with her Grand-Maman late one night in her kitchen. After she was finished sipping her tea, her grandmother would take her cup.

Walking to work is just after lunch for most people since she starts her work in the afternoon. She tries to leave earlier than usual so she can take different streets and walk slowly noticing the homes and parks along the way. Of course in winter with ice caked on the sidewalks forces her to truly walk slowly.

I love this part of Coelho’s book. I can relate to the long journey of nine years studying to get my degree. And throughout that journey I learned so much more outside the classroom. I learned more about myself. I don’t think I would have become the person that I am if I would have crammed it all in three years full time.
Last summer I went on a road trip. Rather than take two days to drive to visit my family 600 Km away and continuing on another 200 km to relax by Lake Erie in a secluded village, I took four days to get to Lake Erie. I drove along the lake making the trip that much longer due to the route and having to drive slower since I was on a secondary route. I stopped at several places to sleep and met amazing people who have also traveled to many other countries. Staying at Airbnb’s that were humble homes, at affordable prices, I was able to get a taste of real living in some of the towns, getting to know the residents of each place…feeling more connected than having stayed at motels or hotels.
Just like my last trip at the end of December, I traveled to San Francisco only for two days before going on to a 4 day retreat in San José. I walked for hours despite the rain by the water and revisited many places as well as discovered new finds.

The retreat in San José was another experience as well since I had never attended a retreat completely alone. Within minutes at the end of the token line, I met someone who became my guide, my mentor and my new friend throughout the four days there.

The postman finally delivered Paulo Coelho’s The Pilgrimage yesterday. Paulo was so anxious to meet his guide that he almost gave himself away to the first man he met at the well, a cunning man who offered to find his sword for him. Paulo found that idea tempting so he could return to Brazil and deal with his business. Finally his guide arrived asking him a question which was the password and Paulo responds with the keywords.

Petrus, his guide warns him to be watchful for there will be more demons along the path. And then his guide gave Paulo a lesson on humility when they were discussing miracles. Petrus explains that the path to knowledge is not only open to intellectuals and thinkers but to everyone including the common people.
