We are given paintings by Van Gogh as inspiration.

Here are Chevrefeuille’s haiku in response to the painting, The Yellow House, 1988, Vincent Van Gogh

 

the yellow house
a sturdy rock in a man’s life –
the cry of a child

the cry of a child
seeing the rainbow for the first time
‘I want to cross that’

This is the house where Van Gogh and Gauguin stayed. Van Gogh painted the sunflower series to adorn Gaugain’s room.

Here are my haiku inspired by this painting:

token gesture
sunflowers in the guest room
the yellow house

the yellow house
echoes dark secrets
between two men

Van Gogh loved this bridge because it reminded him of both Hiroshige and a bridge in his homeland.

Here is Paloma’s stunning series inspired by this painting:

morning washing –
the scent of yellow grass
clinging to my hem

long into morning –
the scent of mud and green things

Here is my attempt:

toiling at daybreak
women washing work clothes/ 
scent of lye

gathering their skirts/
languidly sitting on flat rocks
under the bridge

  1. Wonderful haiku sets for both Cheryl! One gets the inspiration easily when given a Van Gogh. The vibrant colors just cannot be avoided.

  3. This really does give you a great feeling for the women’s labor — the chemical smell, the comfort of resting for a bit. Awesome stuff 🙂

    1. These prompts allows us to not only learn but to explore a bit …I had not realized Gaugin lived in that Yellow house and that Van Gogh painted sunflowers in Gaugin`s bedroom! Et des tournesols en plus!! 🙂

    1. The impressionists are wonderful prompts, Kristjaan…and with the dreary Feb and winter that we are getting a bit weary, these colours were a nice distraction:)

  7. The first set is so profound. It will stick with me. The second one reminds me of India! The women, and men, for that matter, wash the clothes on rocks.
