winter florets (haibun)

Memories of long ago so vivid, she can taste it. A young girl walks to school in the bitter cold. Crunch crunch, echo from her tiny feet.  White smoke comes out her mouth like magic and dewdrops trickle from her eyes clouding her vision.

florets
smaller than springtime buds
sit on eyelashes

looks up open-mouthed
flower tingles her warm tongue
snowflake melts

      1. wow. Where do you live that it gets that cold? (If I may ask) I feel bad complaining about winter when the coldest it gets is -8 F not counting the wind chill

      2. Well now the temps go down to minus -35C but with the windchill -40 I live in Québec but it gets even colder in Manitoba, so I should really not complain.

      3. Ah so you’re my neighbor to the north! One of these days I’m going to get on the train to Quebec. It leaves from a station 4 miles from my apartment. One of these days.
