divine embrace (haibun)

After a long hot taxi ride in heavy traffic, she arrived at the hotel. She looked at the time and knew she might miss the first line for tokens to receive Amma’s embrace (Darshan) later in the evening or night. But luck (if you believe in luck) as you have it, she walked into the dining hall and was the next in line to receive her token. She was then led to the dining room to await Amma. There were over 2,000 registered for the retreat and there would not be room to sit during Atma Puja. And so she sat at a table among other devotees looking at the screen. To know that Amma was just upstairs (for real) added to this solemn moment. The room was silent.
Everyone received blessed water and when they came around to see if anyone was missing water, she took one more for a family member who is ill.
Devi Bhava is a special program that begins with the Atma Puja ceremony for world peace. Afterwards, Amma receives guests for an embrace. She continues doing this all night into the next morning. She was planning on staying the entire night to enjoy the devotional singing and music and remain in the blessed presence of the Divine Mother. In this case, the night went on until 11a.m. the following morning.

Walking around the hotel to exercise her body for the long night, she circled around the tables where there were many articles made at Amma’s ashram for sale. She purchased a few items as well as a 30 mins massage. The latter certainly did allow her to be filled with energy during the night.
She brought along a photo of a family member and when it was her turn to kneel for her embrace, Amma looked at the photo and then straight into her eyes. No words were uttered out loud but the moment was powerful. Amma, still hanging on to the photo, embraced the woman as she wept in her arms. Afterwards, Amma looked at her with a smile and knowing look. A Mother knows!

after months of worry
a cloud is lifted

She realized that “faith” is required to truly recognize daily blessings from the Divine. This time she felt she truly did. This was a turning point on her journey and it felt good, she thought.

On the train ride home, 12 hours after this embrace, she received a message from a loved one …a positive start she hoped.

like all beginnings
baby steps involve falls –and,
time and patience

a lover’s muse (senryu + free verse)

(c)Clr’16

Gazing from afar
in soft whispers – a favourite
love story unfolds

“you are the blue
of skies
that make me dream
of your eyes

you are the pink
of blush
warming my cheeks
when I think
of you

you are the green
of meadows
us – melting into one
a perfect lovers’ scene

you are the wind
off the sea
breathing life into my lungs
you are the red
of blood
running to my heart
you are light
of my life
illuminating total bliss

you are the fire within
that makes me wince with joy
so pure and enduring
left longing for more

you are a vision
just a dream
yet still fills
my whole being
for just a moment
this rumination
still surviving
will always be
and
forever thriving

as I close my eyes
I lay in wait at night
our secret rendezvous
I long for you, my knight
and as I drift away
I see you clear as day

you are the blue of skies
that lost horizon found
held together… bound,
until the sun doth rise.”

Daily moments of sweet reflections – a lover’s muse July 13, 2017

hot june night (haibun) Daily Moments June 19-17

The heat weighed the house all night long. She couldn’t to believe how hot it was as she tossed and turned trying to find a comfortable position and keeping in the right position on so the warm air from the fan could cool her body.

She was visiting her best fried in the country and she could not get over how hot it still was at 4am! “You would think in the country, the night air would cool,” she thought. Suffering from insomnia for years, she tried reading until her eyes were heavy but as soon as she shut the light, her eyes sprung open. She tried watching a movie on her tablet using the precious wifi on her cell phone…she had not asked for the password of her friend’s wifi because she knew her friends did not have a great plan due to their location in their neck of the woods, they were limited to any kind of technology.

She took out her tablet and decided to write. “May as well be productive,” she thought. If she could not sleep, well, her muse may as well suffer like her. She managed to write two poems to a prompt on a haiku meme site. She was pleased…perhaps writing n her journal may dull the senses and she will be able to sleep a few hours at least. She wanted to get up early to help her sister start cleaning their late mother’s house so they could finally put it up for sale.

Perhaps she will see the sun rise…oh, no, she forgot, it was cloudy and the forecast was thunderstorms all day and evening which would make the temperatures drop 10 degrees. Good! Dropping from 35 to 25C would be a blessing. She checked her phone for the temperature and it was 22C outside apparently…but not on the second floor of this wooden two-story house!

Haiku Horizons: Bright

breeding compassion (Waka) Daily Moments June 13, 2016

©Karuna Poole (cropped pics)

thimbleberry shrub
overcome by freeloaders
choked by greedy arms

blackberry vines overstay
morning glories take over

human’s helping hands
unwinding weeds and vines
free the choking stems

greenbelt lovers lend a hand
disentangling carefully

digging at the root
removing each stake – claimed
by jealous lovers

***

bindweeds breed – only
unhealthy relationships
nature’s oppressor

***

world disputes – only,
farm famine and poverty
breeding ground of war

greed lingers at the root
breeding lust for wars

if compassion
could lure like greed and lust
man would be set free

the Golden Rule would become Law
the breeding ground of love

Daily Moments – June 13, 2017  breeding compassion  (waka)

This waka (solo no renga and haiku/senryu) were inspired by Mystery, Adventure and Reward by Karuna’s post at LivingLearningAndLettingGo where she works tirelessly in the Greenbelt behind her home freeing the thumbleberry shrub from bindweeds (morning glory) and blackberry vines.   This post reminded me of one thing, “if only only compassion ruled the world.” I’ve taken the liberty to post a few of her photos to illustrate the meaning of the poem.

Haiku Horizons “door”

thanking her (senryu) Daily Moments March 8 2017

Tossing and turning her thoughts kept her up.  She finally gave in and started writing her thoughts.  Today was International Women’s Day and although she often jokes that it is the world getting prepared to wish her Happy Birthday the following day, it means a lot to her.  She thought of her mother, her grandmother, her teachers and amazing women who taught her so much.  And started writing this…

SHE taught me so much and more…

SHE taught me so much!
she taught me that crying for help
someone would be there always
she taught me touching and hugging
makes it [almost] all go away

she taught me a smile
will get me so much more
and a polite thank you too

she taught me fashion
from head to toe, and that
beauty at any age
must never be rationed

she taught me to read and write
and with so much patience
to read the words ever slowly
that told so many stories

she encouraged me to tell
the stories of those who could not speak
to trust in my pen
and write forgotten tales

she taught me to laugh out loud
flaunt my senseless essence
but also to know when to be quiet
when conflict was present

she taught me to believe
in myself and that would take me far
she taught me love can be beautiful
if only I loved myself more by far

she taught me the gift of giving
and how it returned with so much more
she taught me that killing one with kindness
was better than fighting any day

she taught me to see those who suffer
but not with my eyes
to hear with my heart
and care with my soul

she taught me to be strong
because women
have always carried burdens
for eons of time

she taught me the shadow
at times is a safer place to lead
to model what most speak
is learned so much more

she taught me never to give up
to learn each and every day
was like prevention
chasing the demons away

she taught me chubby or skinny
are women’s distinct beauty
in all different shapes

she taught me to pray
and believe
and never lose hope
if ever I went astray
the Great Spirit was there

she taught me diligence
and hard work
the fuel in meeting my goals
that the journey takes paths
different for each and everyone

she taught me the darkness
was a sign to stop and rest
to lick my old wounds
and heal in good time
the sun would appear
when my scars would form

each and every one
who have touched me
along the way have taught me!
that I am woman, and yes,
I am different than man
and so very much more
and proud to be woman!

not a day goes by
looking up at the sky – without
thanking her
