Autumn night–
I received it from the dog
And gave it to the cat.

purring cat nestles
I slip into hypnotic trance
wake up suddenly
chilly autumn breeze
frissons on my neck
dog rests at my feet
as I turn in for the night
chirps invade my dream
wet tongue on my cheek
beckons me
morning dew glistens
speckled diamonds on the grass
java on the deck
a leaf floats by my cup
cat jumps on my lap
dog takes chase
barks up at the tree

I kept asking myself, “What the heck did the dog give me?” And then I turned my attention to what my cat, Bette, would have done and this brought back fond memories of my Desirée, a mini-Schnauzer who would burrow under the covers until she got to my feet. The organizer hoped that the contest would serve as an opportunity to deepen mutual understanding among people, to promote the interaction of people’s views on Japan and Russia, as well as to convey the enjoyment of reading or composing haiku.
The organizer also hoped that it would serve as an opportunity to strengthen and develop the sister city relationship between Akita and Vladivostok, as well as to…

parks come alive
melodies of springtime
swings squeak
parks come alive
children giggling
shouting “tag, you’re it!”
melodies of springtime
birds sing their tunes
echo through the trees
swings squeak
lovers swaying to the tune
rhythm of their hearts
