Loyal Friend (Haibun)

This was inspired by a Choka I wrote previously, here, when contemplating on the wren.

The woman would sit on the cold concrete during her fifteen minute break. She was wrapped in woolen coat, toque and scarf, shielded by cement pillars. That cold winter, ten years ago, sat in mourning contemplation by a bed of frozen dirt, was once a garden. Twelve months went by as she sat day by day, accompanied by her faithful wren.

bereft, she sits
wren pecks on frozen soil,
a sacred visit

sits by the garden
now a bed of frozen dirt

framed in grey concrete
watches evening traffic flow

three pigeons peck crumbs
office people may have dropped

the cry of seagulls
alert brethren siting food

screech getting closer
envy, greed tormenting gull

pigeons gulp with haste
all but one flew away

then down for the kill
gull assaults the trembling bird

walkers passing by
chase the gull who flies away

bitter cold winter
turns them all into vultures

watching the whole show
wren hunts in that bed of dirt

mourner’s sacred sign
day by day, wren visits her
reminiscing of the past

sitting in darkness (haibun)

Tournesol's avatarStop the Stigma

Depression can be a passage in time life offers one to take stalk of one’s life; other times it can be more complex…meeting up with past traumas, a chemical imbalance and the brain needs a boost of “vitamins”, a professional who accompanies one through the darkness so they don’t stumble in those twists and turns in that labyrinth of a tunnel…perhaps it is a moment to grieve which I often call a “necessary depression” to take the time one needs to mourn a loss…to recognize and embrace that moment even when it hurts.   I remember telling a youth embracing suffering sounds so absurd but picture embracing a cactus! and once you have felt the pain, with a supportive listener helping you detach from the needles of that plant, a lightness is felt and finally one may find enlightenment.
